Immediate dentures are a type of removable denture which are inserted immediately after the removal of teeth. They act as a solution for patients having teeth extracted and giving you a reason to smile, during the healing period.
Because bones and gums can shrink over time following the extraction of teeth, the healing process must be complete before we refit your dentures. So, getting immediate dentures means you don’t have to be without teeth while you wait. We’ll take measurements to make models of your jaws before your surgery while your teeth are in position then use that to create your new smile.
We’ll ensure your immediate dentures are fitting and functioning perfectly during your period of healing. Sometimes, this requires temporary relining them to adjust to minor shifts as your gums continue to heal.
We work with your other dental professionals including dentists, oral surgeons, prosthodontists and periodontists to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
What to expect when you get immediate dentures.
Working with your dentist or oral surgeon, we talk with you to develop a personalised plan to give you the best possible outcome. Here we focus on which teeth (if any) can be retained for stability of your denture.
We sit down with you and discuss how you would like your new dentures to look. This includes talking about tooth shape, colour, setting, function and anything else that might be important to you.
We provide you with a quote with item numbers for your health fund, so you can easily determine your out-of-pocket expense.
We take an impression of your teeth and gums so we can start creating your new immediate dentures, which will be custom-made just for you. You receive your new dentures, ready to be inserted by your dental professional at the time of surgery.
For the first 3 weeks post-surgery we like to see you weekly to adjust your dentures to suit how your mouth is healing, to help the dentures to be as comfortable as possible. Monthly follow-up appointments are then scheduled.
After approximately 3 months, when your mouth and gums have healed, we reshape the base of your dentures to ensure optimum comfort and function.
